JAKARTA, Indonesia (16 April 2026) - The Korea-Indonesia Integrated Ocean Fisheries Technology Training Center (KIOTEC) successfully concluded its latest Marine Survey Equipment Training (MSET) program, held from 13 to 16 April 2026. As an officially endorsed Decade Action (No. 13.7) under the UN Decade of Ocean Science (2021–2030), this initiative, titled Korea–Indonesia Ocean Technology Capacity Enhancement Actions (KIOTEC-CEA), is dedicated to strengthening the technical expertise of Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) in Indonesia.
The four-day intensive training took place at the KIOTEC training center in Ancol, North Jakarta, bringing together 40 master’s degree scholars from nine leading Indonesian partner universities, including ITB, IPB, UGM, UNDIP, UNPATTI, UNHAS, UNPAD, UB, and UNUD. By providing direct experience with advanced oceanography equipment, the program bridges the gap between academic theory and practical field application.
The first MSET session of 2026 focused on marine physical measurements, where participants gained practical experience with advanced instruments, including the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) for current monitoring; Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) sensors for water column profiling; Grab samplers and sieve shakers for geological and benthic analysis. The program combined expert-led lectures from BRIN, ITB, and IPB with field-based data sessions managed by KIOTEC’s specialists and organized by BlueArc Global.
Strengthening Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration
The opening ceremony was attended by the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs (CMFA) and the Agency for Marine and Fisheries Extension and Human Resources (BPPSDMKP), highlighting the importance of international cooperation in advancing Indonesia’s maritime sector. Dr. Park Hansan, Project Manager of KIOTEC and Vice-Chairperson of IOC UNESCO, explains, drawing from his experience, that the primary challenge in regional cooperation is the gap between knowledge and real implementation.
“ODA KIOTEC is not only about programs or facilities. It is also about people, building individuals who can understand the ocean comprehensively, work across disciplines, and translate knowledge into real solutions, particularly in addressing challenges related to food systems, climate change, and sustainable marine resource management.” Said Dr. Park.
Joining via Zoom, Yanti Permatasari, Assistant Deputy for Enhancement of Maritime Resources Competitiveness (CMFA), highlighted capacity development as a primary government priority, noting that talent excellence and technology are key to driving higher standards in the maritime sector:
“As the marine and fisheries sector becomes more critical for food security and sustainable development, we need accurate data and better technology. Capacity building is a primary government priority; by giving our youth hands-on technical skills, we are making a long-term investment in Indonesia’s leadership in global maritime sustainability,” Said Ms. Yanti.
Representing BPPSDMKP, Agung Purnomo delivered remarks on behalf of Dr. Lilly Aprilya Pregiwati, stating:
“ODA KIOTEC represents a concrete and strategic effort aligned with President Prabowo’s strategic initiatives. Under the leadership of Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono and in coordination with the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, we are focusing on developing farming areas, aquaculture, and achieving self-sufficiency in fishing vessels. These goals require accurate marine data and strong human capacity areas where KIOTEC plays a vital role.” Said Mr. Agung
As part of the broader ODA KIOTEC project, this training program continues to serve as a flagship model for Official Development Assistance (ODA), fostering a new era of scientific excellence and maritime cooperation between the Republic of Korea and Indonesia.
