JAKARTA, Indonesia (June 25th, 2026) - In line with ongoing efforts to strengthen national maritime governance, Korea-Indonesia Integrated Ocean Fisheries Technology Training Center (KIOTEC) has hosted its latest special topic course to boost government capacity. The course focuses on the strategic themes of Ocean Accounting and the Economic Valuation of Marine and Fisheries Resources, which have gained increasing attention as it enables a more comprehensive understanding of the value of ocean ecosystems and marine resources, contributing to effective policy development and decision-making.
As part of its continued efforts to strengthen ocean capacity development, KIOTEC also supports the implementation of the Korea-Indonesia Ocean Technology Capacity Enhancement Actions (KIOTEC-CEA), which has been officially endorsed as a Decade Action (No. 13.7) under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). Utilizing KIOTEC’s training facilities and collaborative programs, the initiative aims to strengthen the technical expertise and institutional capacity of Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) in Indonesia.
Held at KIOTEC Ancol in Jakarta, the comprehensive one-day training brought together 40 participants from key agencies, including the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs (Kemenko Pangan), the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Specifically designed for capacity building, the program focuses on strengthening the policy analysis skills of civil servants, researchers, and future government leaders to develop data-driven and impactful marine governance strategies.
The training features three national experts: Dr. Irfan Yulianto (Yayasan Rekam Nusantara), who breaks down the core concepts of ocean accounting; Rizal Bahtiar (IPB University), who focuses on the practical interpretation of economic data; and Dr. Liliek Sofitri (Universitas Indonesia), who reviews policy integration and the limitations of economic valuation models.
The training session opened with remarks from Yanti Permatasari, Assistant Deputy for Marine Resource Competitiveness at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, Dr. Lilly Aprilya Pregiwati, Secretary of BPPSDMKP, and Dr. PARK Hansan, KIOTEC Project Manager and Vice-chairperson of IOC UNESCO. All expressed optimism about the program's real impact on maritime governance. In line with the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries' mandate for local workforce independence, ministry officials emphasized that these economic valuation tools are crucial for strengthening targeted policy analysis to support the acceleration of the blue economy.
“As the world's largest archipelagic country, Indonesia urgently needs reliable ocean accounting and economic valuation tools to drive blue economy growth, and I hope this training provides the practical insights directly applicable to your policymaking and spatial planning efforts." — Dr. PARK Hansan, KIOTEC Project Manager
By organizing this event, KIOTEC proves its commitment to supporting a new generation of adaptive maritime professionals. Equipped with both technical skills in ocean accounting and policy analysis capabilities, the participants are expected to make a real contribution to realizing sustainable, data-driven marine governance for Indonesia.
